VMware are the leading virtualisation company but face considerable pressure from Xen, KVM and Hyper-V; so todays announcements from VMware about their new vSphere software release.
Paul Maritz (VMware CEO) will be announcing it all officially this afternoon in a webcast (9am PST / 5pm GMT). You can sign up for the simulcast here: http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/index.html
From what is available prior to the official announcement/webcast it looks like VMware is making a concerted push to secure their place in the “Cloud Computing” arena. Which to be fair they have already staked out pretty well. vSphere also offers some big performance increases and smaller overhead making it possible to host more virtual servers on less physical hardware.
In terms of internal clouds, VMware has a good case to make; they are theĀ #1 in virtualisation in the corporate market, ESX has come a long way and the additional packages like DRS have brought more automation to the offering. vSphere looks to be extending that for VMware.
We shall post on vSphere again after the webcast and again after the dust has settled and peoples reactions have been expressed.
